Updating agv on vista
If you don't want to pay for a yearly subscription for your virus scan updates, there is always free antivirus software available!
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (download: free.grisoft.com) is one of them.
If malware has taken root on your system, it may try and prevent AVG Anti Virus from updating itself in order to remain undetected.
To remove it, download and install an on-demand scanner that requires no installation and won't interfere with your existing AVG package: Microsoft Safety Scanner and Trend Micro House Call are all reliable free options that you can consider.

Alternatively, your firewall might be incorrectly marking AVG updates as potential security threats and preventing them from coming through.
Temporary files can also be cleaned from AVG manually through the advanced settings menu.
Make sure you are only running one anti-virus tool on your system and that AVG Anti Virus is marked as a trusted application within your firewall program of choice.
An unstable or intermittent Internet connection can prevent AVG Anti Virus from downloading and applying the latest updates, though if this is the case you'll see evidence on other websites and in other programs besides AVG Anti Virus.
The free version only uses the search-Shield while the Active Surf-Shield is disabled.
For this reason, it is better to disable this toolbar at setup (option Yes, I would like to install the AVG Security Toolbar)!
